Hi ya! My name is Joey (she/her), I am a CSA survivor, a qualified counsellor and a member of the BACP who works as a trauma therapist supporting women and girls who have been subjected to sexual violence.

1 in 4 of us will go through some form of sexual abuse as a child. Figures are stagging but not public enough. It is kept hidden which only magnifies survivors shame.

I created the CSA Support Circle in East Dulwich

to be a group which provides support, commonality and build compassion for ourselves and each other. A place to go, to feel not so alone.

Thank you for taking the time to read about me and the group. If it sounds like something you'd want to be a part of, please do sign up. I'll look forward to welcoming and meeting you.

Why I created a CSA Support Circle in East Dulwich

Speaking from my own experiences, I felt so isolated with my feelings around my childhood sexual abuse. It was like this horrible secret that I held that no one else knew or could understand.

I created this group because, for some reason, I found searching for support groups really difficult! Not just the process of actually writing down and seeing the words sexual abuse in front of me, but actually finding a support group. I'm sure they are out there somewhere but I couldn't find one that was near me. So, I decided to make one myself.

I wanted the group to be somewhere we can sit and know we are cherished for who we are and what we have overcome, a space to feel empowered for our voices and opinions and not oppressed for what was done to us. To share supportive tools and coping mechanisms but also feel ok to talk about what hasn't been helpful. Our abuse is not who we are, it does not define us.

How I facilitate

It is important to say straight away, although I am a qualified Counsellor, this group is not a therapeutic space. This group is purely a form of community & peer support. There is not, and never will be, pressure to speak or to share in the group. Similarly, there is no commitment required of you in terms of your attendance.

I am happy to support anyone who may be ready and looking for therapeutic support and signpost them to the correct services, some of which can be found on the Resources page.

I personally believe in female empowerment and strength-based working, this mindset is not for everyone and whilst I will always respect others' values, I feel it is important to know that element about me as the facilitator.
